DURHAM, N.H. - Despite getting out to a slow start, the Boston College women's swimming and diving team defeated the University of New Hampshire, 172-128, in Durham, N.H. on Sunday afternoon.
The Wildcats took first place in the first five events to lead the Eagles 57-36 in the early goings, but Boston College rallied to beat its host in the next four races to reclaim a lead it would never relinquish. Even when it could not earn a first-place slot, Boston College was able to hang on in the overall scoring by earning points in other places, leaving itself in a good position for the win.
Lauren Keibler took the first title for BC in the 200-yard butterfly. Elizabeth Byron won the 50-yard freestyle, and after Katelyn Cox finished first in the one-meter diving competition, Byron returned to the pool for her second "best dual meet performance of 2003" on the day in the 100-free.
Kathleen McCann set an all-time dual meet record with a 2:06.05 in the 200-yard backstroke, while Nicole Duffy and Nikoll Julien set this season's dual meet records in the 500-yard freestyle and 200-breaststroke events, respectively, despite each finishing second to a New Hampshire swimmer in the races.
Victoria Thelin led the pack as Eagles took first, second and third in the 100-butterfly. Cox won the second diving event (three-meter) with teammate Jennifer Rhines just behind, in second. The Eagles finished on top, with McCann setting an all-time dual meet best in the 400-IM for the victory, and the 200-yard freestyle relay squad of Byron, Nina Suryoutomo, Holly Boucher and Caitlin Klick topping its competition.
The men's and women's swimming and diving teams will compete against the University of Massachusetts in a 1 p.m. meet on Saturday, Feb. 8 in Amherst, Mass.
