SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - No. 24 Boston College held off a Seton Hall comeback with a 15-6 run to close the game, earning a 68-58 victory over the Pirates on Wednesday night at Walsh Gym in BIG EAST women's basketball action.
The trio of Jessalyn Deveny (Westford, Mass.), Maureen Leahy (Wilbraham, Mass.), and Becky Gottstein (Albany, N.Y.) led the Eagles, who improved to 17-6 overall (9-3 BIG EAST). The Pirates dropped to 12-11 (6-7 BIG EAST).
Gottstein and Leahy connected to form a vicious one-two combination with 14 and 10 points respectively, while Deveny provided the knock-out punch with 19 points. Fueled by seven points from Clare Droesch (Belle Harbor, N.Y.), Boston College jumped ahead early on and led 30-20 at the intermission. The Eagles continued to look impressive in the second half and took their biggest lead of the evening when a Leahy lay-up made the score 43-30.
Seton Hall refused to give up, however, and presented the Eagles with a tough battle. Behind a seven point spurt by senior forward Cecilia Lindqvist, the Pirates went on a 16-6 tear that put them within three points at 49-46 with 8:02 remaining to play in regulation.
The Eagles would go on to score 13 of their last 18 points at the free throw line, and finished 18-22 at the charity stripe. Lindqvist finished with a solid 15 points, with 12 of those points coming from international waters. Junior center Charlene Thomas contributed 13 points and 6 rebounds in the losing cause for the Pirates.
