
Women's Hockey Tops Connecticut, 3-2

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Freshman Kristin Blundo scored with just 39 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Boston College women's hockey team (12-14-3, 2-7-3 Hockey East) a 3-2 victory over Hockey East rival University of Connecticut (10-17-4, 2-7-3 HE) on Sunday evening at Kelley Rink.
Boston College came out determined to overcome a 1-0 OT loss it suffered Friday night at the hands of the Huskies in Storrs, Conn, scoring just 27 seconds into the game. The goal was Heidi Seidewand's sixth of the season, and was assisted by Jaclyn Kryzak. The Eagles dominated play for the next five minutes before UConn took over for the rest of the stanza. The visitors capped their intense play with a goal by Kim Berry just before the close of the session, at 19:11.
Connecticut struck next, getting a power-play goal by Jill Vandam to put them up, 2-1, at 7:31 in the second. BC retaliated, however, when Renee Taylor capitalized on a power-play opportunity at 16:17. The tying goal was assisted by Jill McInnis and Thia Connolly. Both teams skated out of the period with the 2-2 tie, which held for most of the third as well.
The Eagles would not take let the Huskies take them to overtime for the third time this season, but did not strike till the final minute. Blundo received the puck from McInnis and slapped the puck out of midair for the gamewinner, a power-play goal, at 19:21.
Today's win marks the second in conference play for the Eagles, and the first time they have beaten Connecticut this season. Each game has been close, as the squads skated to a 1-1 tie on Dec. 30, and Connecticut topped BC, 1-0, in overtime on Feb. 14.
With two assists on the night, McInnis moves ahead on the leader board, with a team-high 15 this year.
Lisa Davis made 30 saves in the BC goal, while UConn goaltender Shannon Murphy recorded 14 before being pulled in favor of the extra skater after the Eagles went up, 3-2.
Boston College will close its home season Saturday, Feb. 22, as it welcomes the University of Maine to Kelley Rink at 2 p.m. The Eagles will recognize the careers of their seniors and host an alumni skate after the competition.
