Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Sophomore forward Chris Collins netted two goals and junior forward Ryan Shannon added two assists to lead fifth-ranked Boston College to a 4-1 victory over UMass-Lowell before 5,859 fans in Kelley Rink. The game was the league opener for Boston College (4-2-1, 1-0-0 Hockey East).
Each of Collins' goals came in the final minute of a period. With the score tied at 1-1, Collins netted his first tally with 2.5 seconds remaining in the first period. Shannon and Greg Lauze recorded the assists. The score remained 2-1 until the sophomore struck again at 19:13 of the second period. Shannon and Stephen Gionta set up Collins, who scored crashing the net. The goals were the first two goals of the season for Collins.
UMass-Lowell (3-3-2, 2-2-0 HE) jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 4:39 of the opening period when freshman Jason Tejchma scored the first goal of his young career. Less than four minutes later, BC evened the score on freshman Brian Boyle's goal at 8:27. Andrew Alberts and Adam Pineault got the assists.
After Collins' two goals, BC senior Tony Voce completed the scoring at 17:00 of the third period, netting his team-leading fifth goal of the year, with assists from Ben and Patrick Eaves.
UMass-Lowell was 0-for-2 on the power play. The Eagles have now successfully killed their last 18 penalties. Boston College outshot the visiting River Hawks, 41-16.
UMass-Lowell junior goaltender Chris Davidson made a career-high 37 saves, while BC junior Matti Kaltiainen stopped 15 shots.
Boston College returns to action on Friday, November 7 when it hosts the top-ranked Maine Black Bears in Kelley Rink. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
