Fort Collins, Colo. - The Boston College women's basketball team won the Coors Rocky Mountain Invitational with a 75-61 win over host Colorado State Saturday night at Moby Arena on the campus of Colorado State University. The Eagles now stand at 4-0 overall. The Rams fell to 3-1.
The in-season tournament win marked the first this year for BC. The Eagles have won at least one in-season tournament in four of the last five years. Senior guard Amber Jacobs (Clarks Summit, Pa.) led a quartet of Eagles in double digits. The All-Tournament selection hit for 22 points, including 11 free throws. Jessalyn Deveny (Westford, Mass.), the tournament MVP, connected for 20 points.
BC led from the opening tip as Lisa Macchia (Levittown, N.Y.) scored the game's first points and never relinquished the lead. The Eagles ballooned their lead to as many as 15 in the first half and used a 7-0 in the tail end of the half to take a 10-point advantage into the intermission. Deveny had a dozen at the break while Macchia added 10 of her 17 in the first half.
In the second half, BC maintained its pace and fought off a couple of Colorado State attempts at a comeback. Senior post Maureen Leahy (Wilbraham, Mass.) collected six of her 10 points in the second half while the Eagles were sharp from the line (13-for-15) to secure the win. BC shot an impressive 78.6% (22-28) from the line for the game.
The Rams were led by all-tournament Vanessa Espinoza who scored 16 points. In addition to Deveny, Jacobs, and Espinoza, Alabama's Navonda Moore and Colorado State's Melissa Dennett were named to the all-tournament team.
The Eagles will host regional rival Holy Cross Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. in Conte Forum. They will travel to Providence next weekend to participate in the Brown Classic.
