CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College men's soccer team defeated West Virginia 2-0 in a conference battle on the Newton Campus Soccer Field today. Senior big-man Neil Krause (Assumption College/Holliston, Mass.) tallied his fifth and sixth goals of the season in the Eagle victory.
Boston College improves its record to 5-4-1 overall and 3-2-1 in BIG EAST play. West Virginia falls to 4-6-1 on the year and 2-3-1 in conference action.
The Eagles jumped on the board at the 4:37 mark of the first half when junior Guy Melamed (Ort Greenberg/Nofit, Israel) lofted a free kick from midfield that Krause went up and one-timed with a header from about eighteen yards out. Krause out-jumped Mountaineer goalkeeper Nick Noble to sneak in his fifth of the year.
Krause would later add the insurance goal during the 42nd minute when he headed home a loose ball sent into the box by a corner kick taken by senior Paul Chase (Providence College/Weymouth, Mass.).
Boston College outshot the Mountaineers 14-4 in the first half and 18-9 overall.
West Virginia would play a man down late in the game due a red card issued to Bernard Ouassa at 71:58. A total of six cautions - five yellow cards, one red card - were handed out in the match.
Senior goalie Mike Cardenas (Boston Univ./Framingham, Mass.) recorded his fourth victory and third shutout of the year making one save. Nick Noble took the loss for the Mountaineers tallying three saves but giving up both goals.
The Eagles welcome cross-town opponent Northeastern to the Newton Campus Soccer Field for its first night game, Wednesday, October 8. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
