CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College men's soccer team welcomes the Mountaineers of West Virginia, Sunday, October 5 at 1 p.m. for its fifth straight conference clash.
Entering the week, the Eagles' .71 goals against average (GAA) versus conference opponents, is lowest in the league. Boston College (4-4-1, 2-2-1 BIG EAST) looks to bounce-back into the win column after playing to a 1-1 draw against Providence College on Wednesday.
The stingy Eagle defense, led by seniors Guy Melamed (Ort Greenberg/Nofit, Israel), Paul Chase (Providence College/Weymouth, Mass.) and goalkeeper Mike Cardenas (Boston University/Framingham, Mass.) is tops in the BIG EAST having given up only three goals through four conference games. Junior Pat Haggerty (Lawrence/Lawrenceville, N.J.) also anchors the Eagle backs with freshmen Sam Brill (Newton North/Newton, Mass.) and Richie Gavilanes (St. Benedict's Prep/Orange, N.J.).
Prior to tying the Friars, Boston College beat Syracuse 2-1 last Sunday on the Newton Campus Soccer Field. The Eagles' scoring leader Neil Krause, (four goals) tallied the game-winner against the Orangemen and the lone Eagle goal in the 1-1 tie at Providence.
The Mountaineers (4-5-1, 2-2-1 BIG EAST) lost to Northeastern on Friday night, 2-1. Prior to tying the Northeastern Huskies, West Virginia tied the Univeristy of Connecticut Huskies in Morgantown, W.Va.
Boston College has a one-game edge in the all-time series (4-3-1). Last year, on September 21, Boston College scored two goals in the final 19 minutes to come back and beat the Mountaineers 2-1 in Morgantown, W. Va.
Game time is set Sunday, October 5 at 1 p.m. on Newton Campus Soccer Field.
