Boston College sophomore forward Craig Smith (Los Angeles, CA) has been named to the 2003-04 preseason All-Big East second team by a vote of the league's coaches. The league made the announcement Tuesday at its annual men's basketball Media Day in New York. Smith, teammate Uka Agbai and Coach Al Skinner were in New York for the activities.
Smith established himself as one of the nation's top freshmen last year, starting 28 games and averaging 19.9 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. He shot 60.8 percent from the field, tops among all Big East players. He earned Big East All-Conference second team honors and All-Rookie first team accolades.
Among the preseason All-Big East first team selections are junior center Emeka Okafor and junior guard Ben Gordon of Connecticut, senior forward Darius Rice of Miami, junior guard Chris Thomas of Notre Dame, junior forward/center Ryan Gomes of Providence, and junior forward Hakim Warrick of Syracuse. Smith is joined on the second team by senior guard Julius Page of Pittsburgh, senior guard Andre Barrett of Seton Hall, sophomore guard Gerry McNamara of Syracuse, and senior guard/forward Bryant Matthews of Virginia Tech.
The coaches picked Boston College to finish eighth in 2003-04. Connecticut was picked to win the regular-season title, followed by Syracuse and Notre Dame.
The Eagles tip off with a November 10 exhibition game vs. Inland's Finest in Conte Forum. They open the regular season with a three-game trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands before heading home to play host to Boston University on Saturday, November 29.
