Men's Soccer, Volleyball Garner BIG EAST Weekly Recognition

PROVIDENCE - Senior goalie Mike Cardenas (Framingham, Mass.) was awarded BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week recognition as announced by the league on Monday. Cardenas held BC opponents scoreless through 200 minutes of soccer this week. Cardenas posted shutouts over two ranked opponents to help Boston College to a 1-0-1 week. He leads the league in goals against average, save percentage and is tied for the league- lead in shutouts.
This is the second time Cardenas has garnered the award this season.
Boston College sits atop the conference in defensive statistics having given up only nine goals through 14 games this season. This week, the Eagles blanked Ivy League opponent Yale, 2-0 before playing to a 0-0 draw with 13th-ranked Rutgers on Friday night. Cardenas made seven saves on the week.
The Eagles are back in action Friday, October 24 at 7:30 p.m. when they travel to Jamaica, N.Y., to face St. John's

In volleyball, Alison Shepp was named Co-Rookie of the Week. The freshman middle blocker/right side after an outstanding week of non-conference games. She played outstanding in all six games, notching 23 kills and holding a .356 hitting percentage. Shepp also had three service aces and three blocks. Her presence is dominant on the team, leading BC in hitting percentage (.361) and block solos (13). The other rookie of the week was Erin McQuillian, a middle blocker at Syracuse.
Shepp was named Rookie of the Week earlier this season after a breakout performance at the Holy Cross Crusaders Classic, September 8.
The Eagles are currently seventh in the conference. Volleyball (15-5, 2-2 BIG EAST) will return to action on Friday when they host Notre Dame at 7:30 in Power Gym. Syracuse will arrive at the Heights on Sunday for the second conference match of the weekend, at 1:00 p.m.
