Just two days after winning the 2003 Ice Breaker tournament title, the Boston College hockey team learned it had captured the top spot on both major national polls.
The Eagles were ranked first in both the USCHO.com and the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine polls. New Hampshire was second in both polls. Minnesota was third in the USCHO.com poll and fourth in the USA Today poll. North Dakota, the Eagles' next opponent, was third in the USA Today poll and fourth in the USCHO.com poll.
Boston College claimed the top spot in both polls for three consecutive weeks last winter. BC earned the No. 1 ranking on Nov. 11, 2002 and held its position for the weeks of Nov. 18 and Nov. 25.
In other news, senior captain Ben Eaves earned HOCKEY EAST Co-Player of the Week honors for his effort in the Ice Breaker. He shared the honor with Maine senior forward Todd Jackson.
Eaves scored one goal in the team's 2-2 tie with Minnesota-Duluth on Friday night, and then netted the decisive goal in the sudden-death shootout round. His shootout tally allowed the Eagles to advance to the tournament's championship game. Eaves, a 2002-03 ACHA All-America first-team selection, gained Ice Breaker MVP honors.
Boston College (2-0-1) returns to action this weekend, playing two games against North Dakota in Grand Forks, ND. Game one is scheduled for Friday, October 17 and will be televised by CSTV.
