CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Women's ice hockey opened their season on Sunday afternoon with a win over the Connecticut Polar Bears Ice Hockey Club, 2-0.
This was the first game of head coach Tom Mutch. BC dominated most of the first period. The Eagles had six shots on net, even around the ice and around the team. The Polar Bears had three shots on net, BC goalie Christine Moynihan making the save of two on net. Kerri Sanders received a penalty halfway through the first period for high sticking, and closely behind her was Polar Bear Emily Bydwell, in the box for cross-checking. Neither team was able to capitalize on the power play.
The second period both teams were at full strength and made for an even game on the ice. Kaitlin McGrath and Sanders had excellent shots on net but were stopped by Polar Bear goalie Nicole Stock. Sanders hit a powerful slap shot in the opening second of the second, but the cross bar came in the way and was deflected. Alison Quandt did an outstanding job of keeping the net from being scored upon.
The Eagles seemed reenergized for the third and came back to dominate the ice. BC had 10 shots on Stock. Jessica Tychsen was the first Eagle to put a goal on the board. Her slap shot from the top left corner looked like an easy shot, just at the 12:49 mark. The Eagles continued to hound the net, even as Sanders entered the penalty box for the second time of the game. Shorthanded, BC did not let the Polar Bears get much on goalie Lisa Davis. After Sanders returned to the ice, forward Lindsay Bazzone shot the puck right on Stock and snuck one past her left side at 6:38 left in the third.
BC will return to the ice next Sunday when they play host to Quinnipiac University at 5 p.m.
