CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Two-time Kodak Honorable Mention All-American guard Sarah Behn (Foxborough, Mass.) will have her jersey retired on February 8, 2003, at halftime of the Boston College vs. Connecticut women's basketball game (Noon tip-off). The announcement was made by Director of Athletics Gene DeFilippo.
During her four-year career, Behn amassed 2,523 career points, 682 rebounds, and 250 assists. Over 109 career games played, Behn started all but three. She shot 46 percent from the field and is Boston College's and the BIG EAST's all-time leading scorer, man or woman.
Behn holds several Boston College career records, including points scored (2,523), field goals made (867), field goals attempted (1,859), and free throws made (683). In addition, she holds the BIG EAST career mark for the same four categories.
In her four-year playing career, she was awarded several honors including Kodak Honorable Mention All-America (1991-92, 1992-93), Kodak All-District (1989-90, 1990-91), All-BIG EAST first team (1991-92, 1992-93), BIG EAST Rookie of the Year (1989-90), and multiple BIG EAST Player and Rookie of the Week nods.
"Boston College is proud to welcome Sarah Behn into its rich and historic tradition of retired jerseys," says Director of Athletics Gene DeFilippo. "Honoring the past is very important to the BC athletic family, and we can think of no other women's basketball player in program history more deserving to be the first to have her jersey retired."
Behn will become the 19th student-athlete in Boston College history to have his or her jersey retired and the first female basketball player. BC has retired seven football jerseys, three men's basketball jerseys, and eight men's ice hockey jerseys for a total of 18. In addition, the school has retired three numbers (two football and one men's ice hockey).
"Boston College women's basketball is both excited and proud for this monumental day celebrating the first retired jersey in program history," said head coach Cathy Inglese. "Congratulations to Sarah for her accomplishments. The legacy that she has left within this program is one that will forever be remembered by this occasion."
