CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College women's hockey team played its second consecutive overtime game Friday afternoon at Kelley Rink, topping Yale University, 3-2, with 24.9 seconds remaining in the extra frame. With the victory, the Eagles improve to 7-5-2 on the year, while Yale moves to 3-10-1.
Yale dominated the first period, out-shooting the Eagles 13-5 and controlling the puck for the majority of the time. The Bulldogs capitalized early on, on a Suzanne McGoey goal at 4:11. McGoey and her team took the lead into the locker room for the intermission.
The second period started slowly, with neither team registering a shot on goal for seven and a half minutes. Boston College had a man advantage during that time, but could not capitalize on the power play. The Eagles came to life when Kerri Sanders and Gen Richardson forced Yale netminder Sarah Love to save two hard shots. Freshman goaltender Alison Quandt, who was named the Hockey East Conference Rookie of the Month for December, was tested in the middle of the period. Quandt came up big, making two saves when Yale skated in on her, two on one. BC began to connect its passes and skate with confidence after the flurry and capitalized with 36 seconds left. Renee Taylor knocked the puck home with traffic in front of the net. Thia Connolly and Alaina Clark were credited with the assists.
The Eagles carried the momentum into the third period, and came out strong. They took three quick shots, and killed a penalty during which they allowed Yale only one shot. BC took the lead midway through the third when Kerri Sanders drilled the puck past Love, but Yale evened it up at two, answering less than a minute later with a tally by Natalie Babony.
The 2-2 score held through the end of regulation and through four and a half minutes of the overtime period. Love saved some good Eagle opportunities, but with 24.9 seconds remaining on the clock, BC's Clark deflected a Sarah Carlson shot into the goal to capture the overtime victory.
Love made 28 saves on the day, while Quandt stopped 30.
The Eagles will host Princeton University at 7 p.m. Saturday evening at Kelly Rink.
