PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Boston College used three third period goals - including the gamewinner by sophomore Ryan Shannon - to break a 2-2 tie and defeat Providence, 5-3, Saturday night in front of 3,030 at Schneider Arena. The win improves the Eagles to 15-6-3 (11-4-1 HEA), while the Friars fall to 12-11-1 (6-8-1 HEA).
After Providence took an early 1-0 lead, junior Ben Eaves knotted the score at 1-1 on his 12th goal of the season at 17:28 of the first period. Eaves received a feed from classmate Tony Voce at center ice and unloaded a shot from the top of the circle that deflected off Friar goalie Bobby Goepfert into the net. Voce picked up his 99th career point on the assist.
Providence would steal a 2-1 lead late in the first period before Ryan Murphy tied the game at 2-2 at 14:54 of the second period on his seventh goal of the season. With the Eagles dominating play the second period, junior Ty Hennes forced a turnover just inside the Friar's zone, recovered the puck and slide it back to junior Brett Peterson. Peterson spotted Murphy cycling towards the net and fed him for the tally.
BC took its first lead of the night at 1:27 of the third period on Dave Spina's 11th goal of the season. Freshman Chris Collins hit Spina with a pass from behind the Friars net, and Spina one-timed the puck past Goepfert for the goal.
Eaves added his second goal of the night - with the Providence net empty - to close the scoring.
Sophomore Matti Kaltiainen made 23 saves in net for BC, while Goepfert made 29 saves for Providence.
Boston College returns to action Friday, Jan. 31, when it hosts Massachusetts. Game time is 7 p.m.
