CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - In an exciting meet at the Flynn Recreation Complex in Chestnut Hill, Mass., the Boston College men's swimming team topped the University of Rhode Island, 151-138 on Saturday afternoon.
URI took control early, winning two events, but Dave Herman picked up a key second place finish in the 1000 with a dual meet best time for him this season. Tim Tully got BC going with the team's first victory in the 200 freestyle. In the 100-breaststroke, Brandon Twitchell took first, and Andrew Fromm came from behind to tie up third.
Rhode Island took first in the 200-fly and 50-free, and continued to lead in overall points, after Eli Ackerstein and John Rybicki finished first and third, respectively, in the one-meter diving competition. Twichell and Fromm had more success, taking the top two spots in the 200-breaststroke, and Herman earned another second place finish to gain some points before the Rams came back to extend the lead to 131-113. Ackerstein performed well in the three-meter diving competition, leading up to the most successful race of the day for Boston College.
The Eagles swept the individual medley, finishing 1-2-3 and 4, and taking the lead on the scoreboard for the first time all day, leaving the final event to decide the winner of the meet. After team captain Matt Baker and Jack Connolly swam the first two legs, the Eagles trailed by .8 seconds and its two remaining swimmers had just competed in the 200 IM. Andy Naumann cut the lead and left the fate of the Eagles in the hands of Tully. The sophomore sensation pulled ahead with eight yards to go to earn first place in the race and capture the team victory.
Boston College will prepare for a Wednesday, Jan. 22 meet with Boston University.
