BOSTON - The women's track team defeated Massachusetts, Boston University and Sacred Heart handily at the BU Quadrangular yesterday at the BU Track & Tennis Center. The Eagles scored 91 points, outdistancing the Minutewomen (59 points), Lady Terriers (47) and Pioneers (24).
The highlight of the meet for Boston College was yet another record-shattering performance by freshman thrower Jessica Fazekas (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury). Fazekas smashed her own school shot put mark for the second time this season with a toss of 43-8, which beat her next closest competitor by nearly four feet. She also moved into fifth place on BC's all-time indoor weight throw list with her third-place toss of 43-4 1/2.
Three other Eagles took home top honors at the meet. Freshman Anne Hessberg (Slingerlands, N.Y./Holy Names) won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:17.95, the second fastest clocking this season in the BIG EAST. Junior Laura Smith (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) was victorious in the 3,000, crossing the finish line in 9:51.93, almost 28 seconds ahead of the runner-up. In the 55 hurdles, freshman Jackie Tanzella (West Hartford, Conn./Northwest Catholic) came in first, turning in a time of 8.58.
Several BC athletes claimed runner-up finishes, including freshman Sue Timmons (55-meter dash, 7.72), junior Jennifer Kramer (mile, 4:56.85), sophomore Melissa Sherman (800, 2:20.45), freshman Chelsea Halbmaier (high jump, 5-2 ?), junior Katina McCrory (long jump, 17-1 ?) and freshman Annie Walsh (triple jump, 35-8 ?).
The team returns to BU next Friday and Saturday for the Lady Terrier Classic. The action starts at 2 p.m. both days.
