Vartabedian Wins Flight At Northeast Collegiate Championships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior Damon Vartabedian (Indian Hills/Franklin Lakes, N.J.) defeated St. Johns' Raffi Wartanian 7-5, 6-3 on Sunday morning in the finals of the "B3" Flight while several other Eagles had impressive showings last weekend at the Northeast Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Brown University.
Vartabedian cruised in his two matches on Saturday, beating Iona's Joseph Fetterly 6-0, 6-0 and Niagara's Kris Hrisovulos 6-1, 6-2, to reach Sunday's finals.
Junior Brad Anderson (Edina/Edina, Minn.) advanced to the finals of the "A2" Flight but lost to Brown's Luke Tedaldi 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(4).
In other singles action, sophomore Derrick Chou (John Miller-Great Neck North/Great Neck, N.Y.) came in third in the "B2" Flight, while junior Justin Slattery (Central Catholic/Andover, Mass.) and sophomore Chris McCoy (Central Catholic/Pittsburgh, Pa.) placed fifth in the "A1" and "A4" flights, respectively.
The top doubles finisher for the Eagles was the team of junior Paul Colahan (St. John's Prep [Danvers]/Beverly, Mass.) and sophomore Jonathan Ounjian (American Heritage/Delray Beach, Fla.), which took fourth in the "D2" Flight.
The team has this weekend off and resumes play Oct. 4-6 at the ECAC Tournament in N.Y., N.Y.
