Volleyball Captures College of Charleston Tournament Title

CHARLESTON, S.C.-The Boston College volleyball team opened its 2002 campaign by winning the College of Charleston Tournament in Charleston, S. C. The Eagles beat host College of Charleston this afternoon 3-0 to capture the title. En route to the victory, they also defeated Weber State, 3-2, and Tennessee Tech, 3-0 yesterday. Senior Rachel Bach was named Most Valuable Player for the tournament.
The Eagles defeated the Cougars in three games by scores of 30-27, 30-26 and 30-21. Bach had 20 kills, bringing her tournament total to 55 while maintaining an incredible .442 season hitting percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Katie Andersen contributed 18 kills in the match. Sophomore setter Jessica Brizzolara totaled 49 assists to help coordinate the Eagle offense. Senior Lauren Schwer led the team defensively with 15 digs.
Bach earned the nod for tournament MVP while teammates Andersen and Brizzolara each took home all-tournament honors for their outstanding performances. Also named to the all-tournament team were Weber State's Holly Montano and Stephanie Kropushek, Maggie Stern from Tennessee Tech and Charleston's Mary Sabatino.
The tournament win leaves the Eagles with a best-in-years opening season record of 3-0.
The Eagles return to action Sept. 6 at the Mississippi State University Tournament, where they will face Lamar, Samford and Mississippi State.
