Boston College was selected fifth in the 2002 BIG EAST Men's Soccer Preseason Poll and senior forward Casey Schmidt was chosen the league's preseason Offensive Player of the Year, according to an announcement made by the league office. The selections were made by a vote of the league's 13 head coaches.
The Eagles, which finished tied for sixth in the 2001 league standings, were selected behind Connecticut (eight first-place votes), St. John's (four first-place votes), Notre Dame and Rutgers (one first-place vote).
In 2001, Boston College finished with a 10-8-0 record, including a 6-4-0 mark in league action. The Eagles earned their second consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. BC lost to Fairleigh Dickinson, 1-0, in three overtimes in the opening round.
The 2002 Eagles return 12 lettermen, including eight starters. Schmidt, who was the league's Offensive Player of the Year in 2000, had his action limited last fall after suffering a facial injury early in the season. Still, he tallied five goals and one assist in nine matches.
BC sophomore back Guy Melamed was also recognized in the coaches' preseason balloting. Melamed, who recorded five points in his first season with the Eagles, gained a spot on the Preseason All-BIG EAST team.
Boston College opens its season against league rival St. John's on Sunday, September 1. Game time is noon at the Newton Campus Soccer Field.
