Cicero To Compete In 10,000 At NCAA Track Championships

BATON ROUGE, La. - Maria Cicero (Elmhurst, Ill.) will cap off an incredible first year at Boston College when she competes in the 10,000-meter run at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at 9:10 p.m. (CST) Wednesday evening. The event will take place at Bernie Moore Stadium on the campus of Louisiana State University.
The freshman qualified with a time of 33:53.86, which was the 10th fastest time in the country this season. Cicero's qualifying time was achieved on April 19 at the Mount SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. The NCAA automatic qualifying time for the 10,000-meter run is 34:10.00.
Of the 21 participants competing in the 10,000, Cicero has the second fastest time of any freshman taking part. Colorado's Natalie Florence has the fastest time of any freshman in country (33:40.46), which she also turned in at the Mount SAC Relays. The fastest time in the country in the 10,000 came from Colorado's Jodie Hughes (32:50.80).
Throughout the 2001-02 academic year, Cicero has competed in the NCAA Cross Country Championships and the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, both of which she earned All-America honors.
