Three Eagles Earn Verizon Academic All-District Honors

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Three Boston College student-athletes were selected as 2002 Verizon Academic All-District At-Large Team members. Hockey standouts Ben Eaves (Faribault, Minn.) and Jeff Giuliano (Nashua, N.H.) were named to the 2002 Men's At-Large Second Team and women's lacrosse star Lauren Miller (Timonium, Md.) received selection to the 2002 Women's At-Large Second Team. The At-Large Team included nominees from the following sports: rowing (women), gymnastics, skiing, volleyball (men), fencing, ice hockey, swimming, water polo, field hockey, lacrosse, tennis, wrestling, golf, and rifle.
Nominees to the Verizon Academic All-District Team must possess at least a 3.20 grade point average and be either a starter or important reserve on his or her respective athletic team.
Eaves is an English major in the College of Arts & Sciences. On the ice, he recorded 13 goals and 26 assists for 39 points in only 23 games this season. He led the team in assists, and was second in overall scoring. Even though he missed 15 games during the season, he still garnered All-America accolades, as well as a place on the HOCKEY EAST All-Conference team. In addition, he was named BC's Outstanding Sophomore Scholar-Athlete.
Giuliano, the team's captain, is a finance major in the Carroll School of Management. In 2001-02, he was third on the team in scoring with 35 points on 11 goals and 24 assists in 38 games. He also set the school record for consecutive games played - 166 - never missing a game in his collegiate career. He closed his career with 114 points (40 goals, 74 assists). Off of the ice, he was a three-time member of the HOCKEY EAST All-Academic Team.
Miller is a human development and communications double major in the College of Arts & Sciences. In 2002, she led the team in scoring with 76 points - on 41 goals and 35 assists. She ranks second in the nation in assists per game with 2.06. For the third straight season, she started every game for the Eagles, adding 42 ground balls, 17 caused turnovers and 14 draw controls. She was named a 2002 Regional All-American, as well as a unanimous 2002 All-BIG EAST First Team selection. A four-year starter, she is BC's all-time leader in points (272), goals (144) and assists (128).
So far in the 2001-02 season, Boston College has placed 11 student-athletes on various Verizon Academic All-District teams. The trio joins Cara Blumfield (softball), Rachel Byars (women's basketball), Nicole Conway (women's basketball), Colleen Danaher (women's soccer), Brian Durkin (baseball), Brian Macchi (baseball), Elyse Meredith (women's soccer) and Brooke Shull (volleyball) on this year's teams.
