ROANOKE, Va. - Three Boston College softball players - Cara Blumfield (West Hills, Calif.), Jacqui Goodchild (West Hills, Calif.) and Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.) - were voted to the All-BIG EAST Conference Second Team. The league announced its all-conference selections at the annual awards banquet in conjunction with the BIG EAST Softball Championships being held May 9-11 in Salem, Va. The All-BIG EAST squads - a first team, second team and rookie team - were chosen by a vote of the league's 11 head coaches who could not vote for their own players.
Blumfield, the Eagles' starting shortstop, earned one of the four infield positions on the second team after batting .357 in league games this year to finish ninth in league hitting. The junior had a .517 on-base percentage and a .571 slugging percentage. She also had a perfect fielding percentage in 81 chances. Blumfield finished in the league's top 10 in four offensive categories. Including all games, she ranks in the top 10 in 10 different categories and is seventh nationally in batting with her .445 mark.
Goodchild, the team's right fielder, batted .328 (22-for-67) in 20 league contests. The sophomore also finished ninth in league hits. Goodchild also had a perfect fielding percentage in 30 chances, including one outfield assist. She routinely made dramatic plays in the outfield, including diving grabs. Last year, Goodchild was a BIG EAST All-Rookie Team selection.
Blumfield and Goodchild were also high school teammates at West Hills' El Camino Real High School.
Malandris, a sophomore, was a dominant pitcher in the league before missing the final three weeks of the season with a rib injury. She led the league with her 0.55 earned run average and had a 5-3 record, losing two games by one run. She made 11 appearances with nine starts. Included were seven complete games and four shutouts. Malandris struck out 68 batters and walked only 11, while averaging 7.48 strikeouts per game. She gave up only five earned runs and also recorded one save on the year. Last year, she was a unanimous All-Rookie Team selection.
Boston College finished the BIG EAST season in fifth place with an 11-9 record. Overall, the team was 26-26.
