Track Teams Have Strong Showing At S. Conn. St. Invitational

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Boston College women's outdoor track and field team placed second, while the men's team placed third at the Southern Connecticut State Invitational Saturday afternoon at Jess Dow Field. The women's team finished with a score of 129.5, which was runner-up to Massachusetts with 173. The men's team finished behind runner-up Massachusetts-Lowell (117) and winner Massachusetts (143) with a score of 95.
On the women's side, senior tri-captain Katie Ryan (Elmira, N.Y.) took first place in the 1,500-meter run, as she finished with a time of 4:42.09. She also earned a runner-up result in the 800-meter run, finishing with a time of 2:21.40. Two-sport athlete Sharon Van Tuyl finished right behind Ryan in the 800, as she placed second with a time of 4:44.03.
Sophomore Erin Maloney (Scranton, Pa.) cruised by the competition in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, as she finished first with a time of 12:21.70. Fellow sophomore Julie Heyde was also victorious in the high jump, as she finished with a mark of 5'01.00." The Eagles' continued their success in the field events this outdoor season, as freshman Ann Marie Walsh (Boulder, Colo.) jumped to a mark of 17'00.50" in the long jump, which was good enough for a first-place result.
Junior Megan Kearney (North Canton, N.J.) threw her way past the competition in the discus throw, as she took home a first-place finish with a mark of 126'02.00". Junior Nicolette Pogue (San Jose, Calf.) earned a second- and third-place finish on the afternoon in the 100-meter dash and the triple jump, respectively.
The men's team also had a strong afternoon for head coach Randy Thomas. Freshman Jeff Atkins (Avon, Conn.) had a solid afternoon in the sprint events for the Eagles. Atkins earned a runner-up finish in the 100-meter dash, finishing with a time of 10.95. He followed that up with a victory in the 200-meter dash, as he turned in a time of 22.25.
Junior Brian Mahoney (Weymouth, Mass.) was victorious in the grueling 5,000-meter run, as he finished the race with a time of 15:22.18. Freshman Ashley Jefferson (Newton, Mass.) had a strong showing in the long jump, as he finished with a mark of 20'10.50", which was good enough for first place.
The final winner of the afternoon for the Eagles was senior tri-captain Tony Beirne (Lake Forest, Ill.), who won the discus throwing competition with a mark of 146'07.00". He also placed third in both the hammer throw and the shot put competition. Freshman Trevor Rozier-Byrd (Freehold, N.J.) placed second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase after turning in a time of 9:58.60.
The men's and women's outdoor track and field teams are back in action Saturday, April 13, when they compete at the Dartmouth Invitational in Hanover, N.H.
