WALNUT, Calif. - Several members of the Boston College women's outdoor track team competed at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays on Friday and Saturday at Mt. SAC Stadium. When the competition ended, BC had one woman qualify automatically for the NCAA Championships, while three more provisionally qualified for nationals.
Freshmen Maria Cicero (Elmhurst, Ill.) earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships in the 10,000-meter run after finishing with a time of 33:53.86. Her time was the fifth fastest of all the college athletes participating in the event. Cicero's time also set a new Boston College school record. Michele Hallett, who ran a time of 34:08.00 back in 1985, held the previous record for 17 years.
In the 5,000-meter run, junior Julie Spolidoro (third all-time) and senior Katie Ryan (fifth all-time) both cracked Boston College's all-time list after solid performances in the distance event. Spolidoro (Duxbury, Mass.) finished fourth with a time of 16:43.01, while Ryan (Elmira, N.Y.) placed eighth with a time of 16:46.64. Both Spolidoro and Ryan also earned provisional qualifying times for the NCAA Championships. An automatic qualifying time in the 5,000 is 16:08.00.
Spolidoro, Ryan, sophomore Jennifer Donovan (Melville, N.Y.), who provisionally qualified for the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Friday, and junior Maggie Guiney (Middletown, N.J.) all competed in the 1,500-meter run. Spolidoro and Donovan finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in their heats. Spolidoro recorded a time of 4:31.24, while Donovan was just behind with a time of 4:31.48. In Ryan's heat, she placed eighth with a solid time of 4:28.50. Guiney rounded out things in the 1,500, as she finished 13th in her heat with a time of 439.98.
Freshman Melissa Sherman (Dennis, Mass.) closed out things for the Eagles, as she turned in a season-best time in the 800-meter run. Sherman placed fourth with a time of 2:12.42.
The women's track and field team is back in action on Sunday, April 28, when it competes at the Brown Invitational in Providence, R.I.
