Track Squads Compete At Husky Invitational

DEDHAM, Mass. - Members of the Boston College men's and women's outdoor teams competed at the Solomon Husky Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles received several strong performances by members of both teams.
Leading the way for the women's team was senior Sharon Van Tuyl (Portage, Mich.) and junior Megan Kearney (North Canton, Conn.), who both turned in first-place results for the Eagles. Van Tuyl cruised to victory in the 21 competitor 5,000-meter run. She finished with a time of 16:56.03, which was 39 seconds faster than runner-up Megan Shanahan of Stonehill College. Kearney also had a solid performance in the discus throw, as she place finished with a mark of 137'05.00."
In the 1,500-meter run, sophomore Jennifer Kramer (Loudonville, N.Y.) placed second out of 28 participants. Kramer, who was only four seconds behind Dartmouth's Cecily Garber, turned in a time of 4:38.76. Boston College's 4x400-meter relay team placed first out of 10 teams in the middle distance relay, finishing with a time of 4:03.37.
Sophomore Julie Heyde (Natick, Mass.) completed the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 16.11, which was good enough for fourth place. Senior Zoey O'Sullivan (Auburn, Maine) had a strong showing in the 100-meter dash, as she placed fifth out of 31 competitors with a time of 12.76.
On the men's side, junior Vernon Mickle (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and senior Michael McKenzie (Natick, Mass.) had two of the most impressive performances on Saturday, as they finished first and third, respectively, in the 800-meter dash. Mickle finished with a time of 1:52.70, while McKenzie concluded the race with a time of 1:54.53 in the 67 participant event.
Freshman Trevor Rozier-Byrd (Freehold, N.J.) placed second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, as he concluded the race with a time of 9:32.01. Senior Tony Beirne (Lake Forest, Ill.) turned in a third-place performance in the shot put, as he finished with a mark of 45'03.75."
Freshman Geoff Atkins (Avon, Conn.) continued his successful outdoor season, as he place sixth out of 50 participants in the 200-meter dash. He finished the sprint with a time of 22.54. Junior Matthew Kootman (Middletown, N.J.) finished the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:38.21, which was good enough for eighth place in the grueling event.
The men's and women's outdoor track and field teams are back in action on Sunday, April 28, at the Brown Invitational in Providence, R.I.
