ORONO, Maine - Martin Kariya scored two goals and Michael Schutte had three assists as Maine defeated Boston College 7-3 in the first game of the HOCKEY EAST quarterfinals before 4,107 at Alfond Arena on Thursday night. Maine now leads the best-of-three series one game to none. Maine moved to 21-9-7 on the season, while BC dipped to 19-17-2 overall.
Ryan Murphy put the Eagles on the board first when he struck at 5:57 of the first. Ned Havern moved the puck out of the zone along the right boards to Ales Dolinar who skated into the Black Bears' zone on a two-on-one with Murphy. Dolinar passed off to Murphy who streaked down the left side and pocketed the goal into an open net.
Maine responded with three goals to close out the first period. John Ronan stripped the Eagles' defense along the right boards and sent in Ben Murphy at 8:55 to even the score. Colin Shields gave Maine its first lead of the game at 11:13 when he skated in along the right side for his 26th goal of the year. Tom Reimann and Chris Heisten assisted on the goal.
Kariya then notched a power-play goal at 16:02 to bring the score to 3-1 after one. After winning the draw back to Peter Metcalf, he charged to the net where he deflected a Michael Schutte shot.
The Black Bears opened the second period with another goal to make the score 4-1 at 1:55. Kariya scored his second power-play goal of the night from Metcalf and Schutte. Gray Shaneberger extended the lead to 5-1 at 15:55 when he knocked in the rebound of a Todd Jackson shot. Robert Liscek also assisted on the goal.
Ben Eaves netted BC's second goal just 20 seconds into the third period. After Ryan Shannon's shot from the right face-off circle was blocked, the puck caromed to Tony Voce who fed Eaves on the left crease.
Havern brought BC within two goals at 4:30 when he released a wrist shot from between the face-off circles that bean Maine netminder Mike Morrison to bring the score to 5-3. Tim Kelleher made a save right to A.J. Walker, who fed Havern up the middle for the power-play goal. The Black Bears responded with a goal 21 seconds later to regain the three-goal lead. Ronan intercepted a clearing attempt at the blue line and sent a shot in, which Heisten redirected past Eagle netminder Tim Kelleher.
Maine increased the score to 7-3 at 10:17 when Lucas Lawson one-timed a shot past Kelleher from the top of the left face-off circle when Niko Dimitrakos sent him in from the right boards. Schutte also assisted on the goal.
