ORONO, Maine - Maine used a two-goal second period to take a 4-2 win over Boston College and earned a two-game sweep in the HOCKEY EAST quarterfinal series before 4,659 fans at Alfond Arena on Friday night. Tony Voce scored both of the Eagles' goals.
For the second night in a row the Eagles jumped on the board first. Tony Voce staked BC to a 1-0 lead at 2:23 of the opening period. Ben Eaves stripped a Maine defender as he tried to break out and found Voce on the left doorstep for the goal, his 25th of the season. Maine responded at 5:59 when Prestin Ryan found the back of the net with a slap shot from the left point. The puck deflected up over Eagle netminder Matti Kaltiainen and tied score at 1-1.
Michael Schutte pushed Maine ahead 2-1 at 6:12 of the second period when he knocked in the rebound of a Colin Shields shot right in front of the net. Ben Murphy also assisted on the goal. Voce has his potential second goal of the game called back midway through the second stanza. After tipping in an Anthony D'Arpino point shot at the goal mouth, the referees called back the goal citing it was kicked in with a skate.
Maine swung the game the other way and took a 3-1 lead at 10:50 when Chris Heisten skated down the right wing and let loose a shot from the top of the left face-off circle. Sheilds fed Heisten with a cross-ice pass from the right side of his own zone.
Voce notched his second goal of the game at 18:32 of the third - a shorthanded strike - to pull the Eagles within one goal. Eaves assisted on the goal when he intercepted a clearing pass right in front of the net. It was his fifth shorthanded goal of the year - moving him into a second-place tie nationally in the category - and 26th overall.
Lucas Lawson added an empty net goal at 19:18 to puch the score to 4-2 and take the win and the series.
BC outshot Maine in each period but could not get the puck by Black Bear goaltender Matt Yeats, who made 26 saves in the win. Kaltiainen made 19 saves in the loss.
