CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College Volleyball team began preparation for the 2002 season by securing three highly-touted recruits to National Letter of Intents. The Eagles look to improve upon a record-breaking 2001campaign that saw the team set new marks for overall (18) and conference (5) wins in a season. Head coach Jackie Hadel's squad loses only one player to graduation and there is optimism that the incoming recruits should add much needed depth for this season.
Joining the Eagles for the 2002 campaign are setter/outside hitter Verena Rost (Houston, Texas), right side/outside hitter Emily Stegner (Edina, Minn.) and middle blocker Morgan Woodcock (Liverpool, N.Y.).
Rost will join the Eagles following her senior year at Cypress Creek High School in Houston, Texas. A two-year starter for the varsity volleyball team, she was elected team captain for her senior season. In addition, she garnered all-state and all-Greater Houston honors during her final year. For her outstanding skills, she gained selection to participate in the 2000 and 2001 Junior Olympics where she finished in ninth and 13th place, respectively. She currently plays club volleyball for Texas Elite 18-1's. Academically, she is a four-year member of the All Star Texas Academic team and has maintained a 94 percent average or above in all classes during her high school career.
Stegner is in her final year at Edina High School. She was elected captain of her varsity volleyball squad as a senior. In addition, her resume includes being selected to her all-conference team twice and her all-metro team once, as well as finishing in second place at the 2000 nationals. She will play club volleyball for Minnesota One this spring. Academically, she has been on the high honor roll list for all four years of high school and was named a student-athlete scholar.
Woodcock comes to BC from Liverpool High School, where she currently is in her senior year. She is a three-year letter winner on the varsity volleyball team. As a junior, she lead the team in kills and blocks with 283 and 91, respectively, and was named the team MVP. In addition, she was selected to the First Team All-League and to the Fifth Team All-State. As a senior captain, she set school records for both kills (450) and blocks (115) in a season, en route to being named to the First Team All-League and First Team All-Central New York. A two-sport star, she her high school soccer team to three sectional championships and was named to the First Team All-League her junior season. She will play club volleyball for Primo VBC 17's. Off the court, she is a two-year member of the National Honor Society and has been named a New York State Scholar Athlete for the past three years in soccer and volleyball.
