Women's Ice Hockey Loses To Providence, 4-1

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.- The Boston College women's ice hockey team lost to Providence College, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon at Kelley Rink. Danielle Culgin notched two goals for the Friars. Junior Thia Connolly scored the lone Eagle goal and senior Sharon VanTuyl made 32 saves in net. With the loss, BC drops to 8-18-4 overall, 4-13-3 in the ECAC East. Providence improves to 17-12-3 overall and 11-6-3 in conference play.
The Friars came out flying in the first period, dominating the possession and peppering VanTuyl with numerous shots. The visitors would score first, at the 7:29 mark, with senior Kelly McManus in the penalty box. Culgin scored the first of her two goals, taking a rebound and firing it past the Eagle goalie for the 1-0 lead.
The Friars would double their lead at 6:12 of the second period, when Jenn Butch took a pass from Kelli Halcisak and beat VanTuyl five-hole.
The Eagles would not go down without a fight, however, cutting the lead in half at the 12:44 mark, when freshman forward Heidi Seidewand fired a shot from the left face-off circle that was deflected onto the stick of Connolly, who beat a stunned Friar goaltender, Amy Quinlan, to the glove side. Seidewand received the only assist on Connolly's seventh goal of the season.
Providence, however, would put the game away with two goals, one with :35 seconds remaining in the second period and an insurance tally at 5:22 of the third. The goals were scored by Culgin and Rush Zimmerman, respectively.
For the game, Providence outshot BC 36-20. The Friars were 1 for 2 on the power-play and the Eagles were 0 for 3.
Prior to the match, seniors McManus, VanTuyl, Missy Barsz , and Jaclyn Kryzak were honored for their contributions to Boston College women's ice hockey. The game marked the final home contest of their BC careers.
The two teams will return to action tomorrow night at Schneider Arena, in the regular season finale for both teams. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
