NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Boston College women's lacrosse team lost to the University of Notre Dame, 14-5, on Sunday afternoon at Meyo Field in the BIG EAST opener for both schools. ND received goals from nine different players including multiple goals from four. Freshmen Susie Breaznell and Carley St. Lucia each scored two goals for the Eagles.
With the loss, BC drops to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the BIG EAST, while ND improves to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in conference.
Notre Dame took control of the match from the first draw en route to a 4-0 lead in the first eight minutes of the half. The Eagles responded with two goals to cut the lead to 4-2. Breaznell put BC on the board at 14:58 on an unassisted tally, her second of the season. St. Lucia cut the lead to two less than 90 seconds later on an unassisted goal of her own. The tally was her second of the season, as well. After an Irish goal restored the three-goal lead, sophomore Meggie O'Neill brought the Eagles within striking distance again, tallying her third goal of the season. The home side would respond with four goals in 3:26 to take command of the match before St. Lucia scored her second of the game as time ran down in the first frame. The Irish went into the break with a comfortable 9-4 lead.
What momentum the Eagles had gained with the last goal was quickly taken away as ND's Kassen Delano scored just 55 seconds into the second half. Delano would score again, at the 22:54 mark, to increase the lead to 11-4. The Irish snuffed out any thoughts of an Eagle comeback scoring three of the next four goals to reach the final margin.
For the match, Notre Dame out shot Boston College, 31-13 (23-10 shots on goal) and received five saves from goalkeeper Jen White. BC's goalkeeper combination of Rachel Zeller and Michelle Lawson made 13 saves (eight and five, respectively) with Zeller registering her second loss of the season.
The Eagles will next take the field against Holy Cross on Wednesday, Mar. 20 at Bentley College. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
