BALTIMORE, Md. - The Boston College men's swimming and diving team picked up victories against Iona College and Loyola Colelge (Md.) Saturday afternoon at the Loyola Fitness and Aquatic Center. The Eagles defeated the Gaels of Iona, 78-27, and the Greyhounds of Loyola (Md.), 63-43.
Leading the way for the Eagles were freshman David Herman (San Anselmo, Calif.) and junior Matthew Baker (Lakewood, Wash.), as both swimmers picked up two individual victories apiece. Herman's first win of the day came in the grueling 1,650-yard freestyle event, which he completed with a time of 17:11.68. In a very competitive race, Herman edged out Loyola's Chris Berger by only two seconds. Herman's other win came in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 4:58.37, which was only five one-hundredths of a second faster than Iona's Brent Regan.
Baker had a strong afternoon in the two sprint freestyle events. His first win came in the 50-yard freestyle, turning in a time of 21.95. Baker's time in the 50 was his fastest of the 2001-02 season. His previous best came against Yale back on December 7, which he finished with a time of 21.97. He then followed his win in the 50 with first-place result in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 48.23.
Freshman Robert Keely (Staten Island, N.Y.) helped the Eagles complete the sweep of all the individual freestyle events by earning a first-place finish in the 200. He turned in a season-best time of 1:44.55, which is also the fastest on the team this year in the event. Freshmen Brandon Twichell (Fayetteville, N.Y.) earned the Eagles their final win of the afternoon. He won the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing with a time of 2:08.44.
Senior co-captain Stephen Hunter (Chester, N.Y.) finished runner-up in both the one- and three-meter diving competitions. He completed the one-meter with a score of 192.53 and the three-meter with a score of 191.85.
