Tough weekend for the Eagles! Things did not turn out as we planned on our West Coast swing. We lost three-straight games to the University of California at Berkeley. This was obviously a very disappointing result as we all believed we could play with, and beat, a team of Cal's caliber. Whenever things don't happen as planned, it's necessary to step back and take the good out of a bad situation. If we can accomplish this, the past three games hold the potential to be a springboard for our season.
I, just like everyone on our team, hates to lose. So this weekend was not an enjoyable one since we did not win a single game. After having been home for a few days and having time to reflect on the weekend, it occurred that this could have been the best possible thing for us. Coming off the excellent weekend we had in North Carolina, going 3-0 against Delaware State and Davidson, the team was riding high with the utmost confidence in our abilities. Maybe we were a little too high. For the first two games it came down to not doing the little things that prevented us from getting two wins. Untimely errors, failing to put a ball in play with a man on third and less than two outs, not making a play to get us out of an inning and making the wrong pitch in the wrong situation were all oversights that could have made the difference. It is much more beneficial to our team to pick up on these shortcomings now as opposed to in May when the (BIG EAST) tournament is closing in. It should be noted these things did happen for a reason.
The makeup of our team is unique in the sense that we have quality leadership from our upperclassmen and a very talented crop of newcomers who are playing right away. In fact, our entire starting infield is all first year players. It will take these guys time to get their feet wet, which means making a few errors along the way. These errors are also certain to come at the beginning of the season. The pace of college baseball is much faster than what they are used to at the high school level, an adjustment period is inevitable. This attitude concerning early mishaps needs to be infused in our entire team. We play a 56 game schedule...so far we've only played 6 of those games. To say the least, it's not time to start panicking. We have a long way to go, and these mistakes we made this weekend will be corrected in future situations. We are all excited to head down to Florida and pick up a bunch of wins to get us feeling good again. I also think we will beat the Red Sox this year. Predicted score: Eagles -18, Sox - 1.
