MEDFORD, Mass. - The Boston College women's track and field team finished fourth, with a final score of 45.50, at the All-New England Championships at the Gantcher Center on the campus of Tufts University. The Eagles finished behind Wheaton College (3rd - 55.50), Northeastern University (2nd - 104) and the University of Connecticut (1st - 183).
Freshman Saki Sugano (Bellevue, Wash.) continued to have a strong indoor season in the pole vault, as she placed seventh with a new Boston College record of 11'04.50". Sugano owned the previous school record of 10'06.00", which she set at the Northeastern Invitational.
Junior Laura Smith (Holden, Mass.) was the lone Boston College participant to take home a first-place finish. In the one-mile run, she edged out Connecticut runner Sarah Casilli. They finished with times of 4:55.52 and 4:55.87, respectively. Smith's time is the second fastest on the squad this year, only behind freshman Maria Cicero (Elmhurst, Ill.). Cicero's time of 4:51.02 came during the Boston University/Providence College meet.
Sophomore Julie Heyde (Natick, Mass.) and freshman Liz Hassan (Whitman, Mass.) had strong showings in the pentathlon, as they placed second and fourth, respectively. Heyde finished with a total score of 3,162, while Hassan completed the five events with a score of 3,089. Sophomore Jennifer Kramer (Loudonville, N.Y.) had a solid showing in the 3,00-meter run, as she finished second with a time of 10:02.78.
Freshman Melissa Sherman (Dennis, Mass.) earned the Eagles six points by placing third in the 500-meter dash. She finished with a time of 1:16.25, which was 45 one-hundredths of a second faster than her time in the preliminary round. Sophomore Jennifer Donovan (Melville, N.Y.) turned in a time of 2:56.11 in the 1,000-meter run, which was good enough for third place. Her time is also the fastest on the team this year in the 1,000, surpassing her previous-best mark of 2:56.43.
The women's indoor track and field team is back in action Saturday and Sunday, March 2-3, at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships in Boston.
