CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.- The Boston College women's ice hockey team lost to the University of Maine, 5-3, on Saturday evening at Kelley Rink. The Black Bears gained a split of the season series on the back of a three-goal outburst in the second period. The Eagles offense was lead by freshman forward Kerri Sanders (two goals) and senior forward Kelly McManus (goal and an assist) and Freshman goaltender Lisa Davis made 28 saves in the net.
With the loss, BC drops to 8-17-4 overall, 4-12-3 in the ECAC East. Maine improves to 15-14-3 overall and 7-10-2 in conference play.
Maine scored the game's opening goal at 12:03 of the first period. Meagan Arts pounced on a rebound off of a point shot and fired the puck through Davis' five-hole. The Black Bears doubled their lead just 42 seconds into the second stanza, when Jamie Hill stole a breakout pass, walked in alone on Davis and beat the goalie to the short side. Maine took a 3-0 lead at the 5:28 mark when Aarts found the back of the net for the second time on the evening.
BC would pull one goal back less than two minutes later, when Sanders tipped a Sarah Carlson shot from the point past Maine goalie Lara Smart. Sanders' fourth goal of the season was assisted by Carlson and Sarah Engwall. Maine, however, would close out the scoring for the second period at the 12:30 mark, when Hill scored her second goal of the game off of a BC turnover in its defensive zone.
The Eagles would not go down easily and Sanders found the back of the net at 6:14 of the third to pull BC back within two goals. Bronwen Kelley and McManus collected assists on the play. The comeback was not to be, however, as Maine would add an empty net goal from Karen Droog with time winding down. A power-play goal from Kelly McManus with 20 seconds remaining would bring the Eagles closer, but her 17th tally of the season would be too little too late for any comeback hopes.
For the game, Maine outshot BC 33-32. The Black Bears were 0-2 on the power-play and the Eagles finished 1-4.
BC will return to the ice on Saturday, March 2 against Providence College at Kelley Rink. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
