CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.- Senior forward Kelly McManus registered her first hat trick of her Boston College career to lead the women's ice hockey team past Maine, 5-2, on Friday evening at Kelley Rink. Sophomore forward Alaina Clark collected three assists and freshman goaltender Lisa Davis made 30 saves for the Eagles.
With the win, BC improves to 8-16-4 overall, 4-11-3 in the ECAC East and, more importantly, moves to within three points of the Black Bears for sixth place in the conference. Maine falls to 14-14-3 overall and 6-10-2 in conference play.
Both teams came out on the attack in the first period, as neither defense could shut down the opposing offense. Maine got on the board at the 5:06 mark, when Karen Droog skated alone on Davis, waited for the goalie to commit and backhanded a shot into the net. Tracy Caridade collected the lone assist on the play.
BC would knot the score less than two minutes later, when McManus scored the first of her three goals on the evening. Junior defender Gen Richardson and Clark assisted on the tally.
The Eagles would take the lead just 1:41 into the second frame on a goal by junior Jaclyn Kryzak. Kryzak took advantage of a misplayed puck in the Maine zone and beat Black Bears' goaltender Dawn Froats five-hole. Sophomore Kaitlin McGrath collected the assist on Kryzak's fourth goal of the season. McManus doubled the lead just two minutes later, collecting a pass from Kerri Sanders and beating Froats to the near post. Freshman Sanders and Clark earned assists on the goal. After a Missy Barsz goal made the lead 4-1, McManus finished off her hat trick at the 16:25 mark. McManus' 16th goal of the season was again by Clark and Sanders.
Maine pulled one goal back midway through the third period, but Davis held the Black Bears scoreless the rest of the way, turning aside 12 shots in the final frame.
For the game, Maine outshot BC 32-25. Neither team committed a penalty or had a power play in the game.
The two teams will return to the ice on Saturday, February 23 at Kelley Rink. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
