You could see the excitement on everyone's faces as we boarded the bus and headed towards the airport for out first tournament of the year. We were out of "the bubble" and turf-burn and bubble-bounces would soon be far behind us. We would play five games in the next four days and each one would provide lessons to carry with us throughout the season.
It seems that the countless hours of practice we have put in this year are starting to pay off. Our defense was strong with Cara making many unbelievable plays at shortstop, Leah firing a perfect strike to home to nail a would-be go-ahead baserunner, and Lisa setting the tone with a stellar performance in her collegiate debut behind the plate.
At the plate, we made consistent contact, often out-hit our opponents and saw clutch performances from Sara, Elyse, Erin, Lombardi, Jacqui and Cara (with her solo shot in game five!).
We played great softball for twenty-seven innings,...... the only problem was that we totaled thirty three innings in this tournament at Texas A&M University. We've come out of our first weekend learning that to make it to the level we expect to be at the end of the season, we need to stay tough and play hard all seven innings!!!!! We've learned early on the importance of showing up with all three ingredients, offense, defense and pitching. This came together for us in our final game vs. Utah on Sunday morning. We stayed focused and battled through eight innings to come out with our first win of the year.
We left Texas with a clear understanding of where we are, how we can improve and what it is going to take to accomplish the many goals we have set for ourselves this season.
