NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - Merrimack scored four unanswered goals to open the game as the Warriors defeated Boston College, 5-2, in HOCKEY EAST action before 2,809 at the Volpe Complex tonight. The loss snapped the Eagles' three-game winning streak.
Merrimack (10-19-2, 5-14-2 HEA) scored two goals 32 seconds apart in the first period - at 3:57 and 4:29 - to take a fast 2-0 lead. Nick Camarata put a rebound past Eagle netmider Matti Kaltiainen to open the scoring, before Nick Parillo broke in from the blue line alone for the second goal.
Alex Sikatchev scored twice in the second period to extend the lead to 4-0 before the Eagles got on the scoreboard. Dave Spina netted his second power-play goal in as many nights at 12:32 to break Boston College (16-14-2, 8-11-1 HEA) through to the scoring column. Tony Voce and J.D. Forrest assisted on the goal.
Bill Cass powered in a rising slapshot from the left point 59 seconds into the third period to pull the Eagles within two goals with a period to play. Ben Eaves and Voce received assists on the goal for their work in the corner to get Cass the puck.
The Eagles continued to pressure Merrimack and its goaltender Joe Exter, but a late hit from behind major penalty and resulting game misconduct to Voce forced the Eagles to kill a five-minute Merrimack power-play. The Warriors' Ryan Kiley made the Eagles' job easier by taking a hooking penalty 3:20 into the major, but the Eagles were unable to capitalize on the resulting 4x4 and 5x4 opportunities.
The Warriors' Ryan Cordeiro added an empty net goal at 19:24 to secure the win.
Exter, who turned away two one-on-none breakaways each by Voce and Spina as well as a shorthanded bid by Ryan Shannon in the game, finished with 34 saves. Kaltiainen made 26 saves in the loss.
Boston College will next face Northeastern in a home-and-home series on Friday and Sunday, Feb. 22 and 24. BC will travel to Matthews Arena on Friday for a 7 p.m. game, before hosting the Huskies in a 3 p.m. affair on Sunday.
