CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Members of the Boston College men's and women's indoor track and field teams will compete in BIG EAST Indoor Championships, Saturday and Sunday, in Syracuse, N.Y. at the Carrier Dome. Georgetown University's men's and women's teams head into the weekend looking to defend its 2001 championships.
Boston College women's and men's teams are looking to improve on last year's team results. The women placed ninth, out of 14 teams, while the men's placed 14th. The chances of both teams improving look very strong following a strong regular season.
While the women's team will send several athletes who have a chance of scoring in the meet, it will also have to replace the likes of recent graduate Shannon Smith, who won the one-mile and 3,000-meter races at last year's meet. Also, junior Megan Guiney, who finished second in the 5,000-meter run last year, will not be competing at this year's championships because she is redshirting the indoor season.
This year, the Eagles' distance medley relay team looks to defend their title. This year's team consists of freshmen Maria Cicero (Elmhurst, Ill.), Melissa Sherman (Dennis, Mass.), sophomore Jennifer Donovan (Melville, N.Y.) and junior Laura Smith (Holden, Mass.). Cicero, who has already qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 5,000-meter run, is one of Boston College's best shots at winning a conference championship, as she will take part in the 3,000-meter run. Donovan and Kramer also give the Eagles a legitimate chance for a title, as they will compete in the one-mile and 5,000-meter races, respectively.
Freshman Liz Hassan (Whitman, Mass.) and sophomore Julie Heyde (Natick, Mass.) are representing the Eagles in the grueling pentathlon event. Heyde is also competing in the high jump competition. Senior Zoey O'Sullivan (Auburn, Maine) and junior Nicolette Pogue (San Jose, Calif.) give the Eagles a great opportunity of scoring points, as both will compete in the 60-meter dash.
While the men's team does not have as many participants competing in the meet as the women do, it still has several athletes who have a chance of scoring. With senior Tony Beirne (Lake Forest, Ill.) and sophomore Doug Goodwin (Freeport, N.Y.), who plays on Boston College's football team, competing in the 35-lbs. weight throw and shot put, respectively, the Eagles have a legitimate shot at picking up points.
The distance medley and 4x800-meter relays are two events the men's team could challenge for a conference championship. Senior Michael McKenzie (Natick, Mass.), juniors Vernon Mickle (Bay Shore, N.Y.), Shawn Wallace (Wakefield, Mass.) and sophomore Keith Normant (Needham, Mass.) will represent Boston College in the distance medley relay, while McKenzie, Mickle, Wallace and senior James Mann will compete in the 4x800 relay. Freshmen Jeff Atkins (Avon, Conn.) and Ryan Sullivan (Tewksbury, Mass.) are making their first appearance at the conference championship, as they will compete in the 400-meter dash and pentathlon, respectively.
An added bonus to this year's meet is that followers will be able to watch a WebCast of the BIG EAST Indoor Championships on www.BIGEAST.org, the league has announced. TrackMeets.com will broadcast live coverage of every race and every field event this weekend. High speed internet access (cable modem, ISDN, T1, campus ethernet, etc.) is recommended. A Windows MediaPlayer is also necessary. It is best viewed using the most recent version of Microsoft Internet Explorer, which is highly recommended.
