BOSTON, Mass. - The Boston College women's ice hockey team lost, 7-2, to Harvard University in the championship game of the 2002 Women's Beanpot, on Tuesday evening at Matthews Arena. The Crimson was led by tournament MVP Tracy Catlin's one goal and two assists. Senior goaltender Alison Kuusisto also made 20 saves for Harvard and took home the Bertagna Award, given to the most outstanding goaltender of the tournament. BC was led by freshman goaltender Lisa Davis, who made 30 saves, and received goals from sophomore Alaina Clark and senior captain Missy Barsz.
With the loss, the Eagles drop to 7-16-3 overall on the season. Harvard won its fourth straight Beanpot title and improves to 13-9-1 on the season.
Freshman Ali Crum put the Crimson on the board at the 8:18 mark of the first period, taking a pass from sophomore Lauren McAuliffe and firing it low blocker-side, past Davis. Harvard would double its lead at 17:52, when Freshman Kat Sweet found herself alone at the left face-off circle, twisted and fired a slapshot high over the left shoulder of the Eagle goalie. Shots for the first period were 15-8 in favor of the Crimson.
The second period began on a positive note for BC, with Harvard being assessed a protocol penalty, but the Eagles were unable to mount any sustained offense. The Crimson would kill off the penalty and then take control of the game. Catlin would give the Crimson a three-goal advantage at 13:21, taking an outlet pass from Sweet, dancing around a BC defender and beating Davis with a back-hander blocker-side. The Crimson would add one more goal in the second frame, a five-on-three power play goal scored by McAuliffe with the assist from freshman Nicole Corriero. Shots on goal in the second period were 14-5 in favor of the Crimson.
Boston College would pull one back midway through the final period. Senior assistant Kelly McManus released Clark on a breakaway and the sophomore did not miss the chance, firing a shot, over the glove of Kuusisto. The goal, Clark's sixth of the year, was scored at 9:20 with the lone assist being credited to McManus.
Harvard, however, would squash any chance of an Eagle comeback just 55 seconds later when Corriero fired in a rebound shot. Catlin would put the game well beyond reach at -more- 10:53, netting a goal from Sweet and Emily Haigh.
Barsz would tally at 19:02 on a pass from sophomore Kaitlin McGrath, but the Crimson would finish off the scoring at the 19:55 mark, on a goal from McAuliffe.
For the game, Harvard outshot BC 40-22. Davis made 30 saves before being replaced by senior goaltender Sharon VanTuyl midway though the final frame. VanTuyl finished with 3 saves.
Boston College returns to action on Tuesday, February 19 against New Hampshire at Kelley Rink. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
