BOSTON - Freshman goaltender Matti Kaltiainen earned his first career shutout and sophomore Tony Voce scored one goal and added one assist as Boston College defeated Harvard, 4-0, in the consolation game of the 50th Annual Beanpot at the FleetCenter.
Boston College (15-13-2) posted a two-goal lead after the first period. Voce opened the scoring at 9:53 when he broke in down the left wing for his 22nd goal of the season. Ty Hennes and Andrew Alberts set up the goal with work along the right boards in the neutral zone. Hennes sent in Voce with a cross-ice pass to the left side.
At 15:33, Ben Eaves netted his second goal in as many games since his 10-game lay off from broken ribs. Working along the left boards at the blue line, he poked the puck past a Harvard defenseman and skated in on a two-on-one with Ryan Murphy. Eaves released the shot from the left face-off circle and beat Crimson netmider Will Crothers for the 2-0 lead. Voce and John Adams assisted on Eaves' 10th goal of the year.
Anthony D'Arpino, who has seen time as both a forward and defenseman this season, put the Eagles up 3-0 just 43 seconds into the second period. Jeff Giuliano's shot from the right face-off circle rebounded right to D'Arpino on the left side for his first career goal. Ales Dolinar also assisted on the score.
Bill Cass recorded a power-play goal to close out the scoring at 18:38 of the third period. Screening right in front of the net, Cass redirected a Brett Peterson shot from the point for his second goal of the season. Dolinar was also credited with an assist.
Kaltiainen made 22 saves for the shutout. Boston College outshot the Crimson 26-22 for the game as Crothers also made 22 saves. Harvard (10-10-3) only outshot the Eagles in the first period.
Kaltiainen's shutout was the Eagles' second blanking of the Crimson this season. On Nov. 25, Tim Kelleher stopped 23 shots in BC's 1-0 victory over Harvard at Kelley Rink.
The freshman also copped the tournament's Eberly Trophy after earning the highest save percentage over two games. Kaltiainen stopped 42 of 46 shots for a .913 save percentage over the two-night event. BU's Sean Fields (.893) and Northeastern's Keni Gibson (.888) were also under consideration. Harvard used two different goaltenders so neither was eligible for the award. Kaltiainen's award marks the eighth time an Eagles has been honored with the award and he is second Eagle to win the award in as many years. Scott Clemmensen won it in 2001.
Boston College will next play Merrimack in a home-and-home series on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 15-16. The Eagles will host the Warriors on Friday at 7 p.m. before traveling to North Andover on Saturday for a 7 p.m. tilt.
