Cicero Wins USA Winter Cross Country Championship

VANCOUVER, Wash. - Boston College freshman cross country runner Maria Cicero (Elmhurst, Ill./York) won the 2002 USA Winter Cross Country Championship 6,000-meter race on Saturday afternoon at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site.
Cicero, who has already qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in the 5,000-meter run, breezed by the other 37 competitors en route to her first national championship. She finished with a time of 21:05, which was 14 seconds faster than runner-up Erika Odlaug, who was running unattached. Stanford University freshman Sara Bei finished in third place with a time of 21:26. Cicero, Bei and Penn State University freshman Michelle Wale, who placed 10th, were the only collegiate runners in the meet.
