CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.- The Boston College women's ice hockey scored four goals in the span of 3:17 in the third period to break open a 1-1 tie and defeat Quinnipiac University, 5-1, on Friday night at Kelley Rink. Senior captain Missy Barsz scored two goals and Kelly McManus and Alaina Clark each added one goal and one assist for the Eagles. With the win, BC moves to 6-14-3 overall on the season and 2-10-2 in the ECAC. Quinnipiac drops to 3-17-1 overall and 0-13-0 in the ECAC.
The Eagles took the early advantage at 2:43 of the first period, when freshman Heidi Seidewand stuffed a wrap around shot past Brave goaltender Mel Courtemanche. The goal, Seidewand's third of the season, was assisted by Renee Taylor and Kerri Sanders.
Although the Eagles dominated play in the rest of the first and the entire second period, the home side was not able to find a second goal through two periods.
The Braves would knot the score, completely against the run of play, at the 8:18 mark of the third period. Ashley Berglund skated across the blue line and fired a shot past Eagle goaltender Lisa Davis. The goal might have tied the game, but it only served to ignite the Eagle attack.
The home fans would not go home disappointed when, at the 13:02 mark, Clark took a McManus pass, skated in alone and roofed a shot over the glove of Courtemanche and into the net. The goal, Clark's fifth of the season and fourth in five games, awakened the Eagle offense which had been inefficient throughout much of the season. Just over one minute later, Barsz would score her first goal (seventh of the season), assisted by Kaitlin McGrath and Jaclyn Kryzak. Just one minute later, McManus would score on a pass from Clark. The Eagles finished off the scoring just 51 seconds later when Barsz took another superb pass from McGrath and one-timed the puck past Courtemanche.
The Eagles' third period outburst was as many goals as the team had scored in an entire game this season.
For the game, BC outshot Quinnipiac 33-12. Davis made 11 saves for the Eagles and Courtemanche 28 for the Braves.
The two teams will return to the ice on Saturday, February 2 at Kelley Rink. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
