CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - No. 1 Boston College overcame a 1-0 first-period deficit by scoring four unanswered goals en route to a 4-1 victory over cross-town rival Northeastern. The win improves the Eagles to 9-1-1 (6-1-0 HE) while the Huskies fall to 2-7-2 (1-5-1 HE).
Sophomore Dave Spina led the Eagles with two back-to-back goals, his fifth and sixth of the season respectively.
Northeastern jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 11:02 of the first period on Mike Ryan's 5x3 power-play goal.
The Huskies took their 1-0 lead into the locker room after one period, thanks to Husky goalie Keni Gibson who stopped all 12 shots he faced. The Eagles' 1-0 deficit after one frame marked the first time this season the Eagles were held scoreless and trailed after one period at home.
The tide turned at 11:40 of the second period when BC goalie Tim Kelleher made three spectacular saves, robbing Jared Mudryk on a breakaway, then sprawling across the crease to stop two successive rebounds.
Only 1:20 later, junior Ben Eaves knotted the score at one, collecting a pass from Tony Voce who was positioned behind the net and connecting on a one-timer to beat Gibson.
Spina picked up his first goal of the night - the gamewinner - on a nifty feed from Chris Collins at 14:07 of the second period. Ryan Shannon also collected an assist on the tally.
Spina provided the Eagles some breathing room, scoring at 9:06 of the third period. Ben Eaves and Andrew Alberts were credited with the assists.
Ryan Shannon secured the win at 14:21 of the third period on an unassisted tally. Shannon intercepted the puck at center ice, and streaked into the Huskies' zone for his fourth goal of the season.
Kelleher made 13 saves for the Eagles to improve his record to 6-0-0. Kelleher's undefeated start is the best of his career. Gibson made 33 saves for Northeastern.
The last time Boston College started the season with only one loss after 11 games was 1977-78, when it opened at 10-1-0.
BC returns to action Tuesday, Nov. 26, when it travels to Hanover, N.H. to face Dartmouth. Game time is 7 p.m.
