CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Senior Casey Schmidt (Newbury Park/Newbury Park, Calif.) was named to the Verizon Academic All-America University Division Men's Soccer Third Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced today. This announcement comes after he received First Team Academic All-District laurels.
Schmidt is the first Boston College men's soccer player to receive this distinction.
A history major with a 3.33 grade point average, Schmidt holds the Boston College record for career goals, with 34, and is third on the career points list, with 76. This season he has a team-high 10 goals to go along with two assists. His 22 points also pace the Eagles.
This is the latest addition to a long list of academic honors for Schmidt. He is a two-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star as well as a two-time recipient of the Athletic Director's Award for Academic Achievement. Two years ago Schmidt was named Boston College's Outstanding Sophomore Male Scholar-Athlete and last year he was awarded the Thomas McElroy '80 Scholarship.
Schmidt and the Eagles (16-4) earned the No. 5 seed and a first-round bye in the NCAA Tournament, and will host the winner of the Northeastern-Lehigh match in a second-round game on Wednesday, Nov. 27 at 1 p.m.
