PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Fifth-year goalkeeper Kyle Singer (University of Virginia/Plymouth, Minn.) was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year, head coach Ed Kelly and his staff were named BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year and a record six Eagles garnered all-BIG EAST accolades, the conference office announced today. Singer is the second BC keeper to receive this award in the last three years as Chris Hamblin took home the honor in 2000. The six all-BIG EAST selections best the previous mark of four, which the Eagles accomplished in 1995 and 2001. The four first-team picks are also the most ever.
Singer, who also was named to the all-BIG EAST first team, is 13-4 on the year -- the 13 wins are the most in school history -- with a 0.96 goals against average, third best in the conference. He has posted three shutouts, two of which came in BIG EAST matches.
Leading the way on the first team is forward Casey Schmidt (Newbury Park/Newbury Park, Calif.), who garnered the same accolade in 2000. Last year he was chosen for the the third team after appearing in just half of the team's games. Schmidt leads the team with nine goals -- five of which are gamewinners -- and 19 points. His eight regular-season goals placed him in a tie for fifth in the BIG EAST while his 17 regular-season points were tied for eighth most in the conference. With 33 career goals, Schmidt is Boston College's leader in that category.
Joining Schmidt is senior Bobby Thompson (Framingham/Framingham, Mass.), whose eight assists lead the team and are tied for second most in the BIG EAST. Thompson's 42 career points place him eighth on the school's all-time list. This is Thompson's first appearance on the all-BIG EAST squad.
Rounding out the first-teamers is another first-time selection, sophomore back Guy Melamned (Ort Greenberg/Nofit Israel). He is the cornerstone of a defense that ranks third in the conference in goals allowed (16) and goals against average (0.90). He has contributed on the offensive end as well, scoring four goals, including two gamewinners.
Enjoying his second appearance in as many years on the all-BIG EAST team is sophomore Bill Arnault (Cicero-North Syracuse/Clay, N.Y.). He moved up to the second team this year after earning third-team accolades last season. This year Arnault has contributed a goal and two assists and has provided steady play from his midfield position.
For the second year in a row, junior back Paul Chase (Providence College/Weymouth, Mass.) finds himself on the all-conference squad, this time as a third-teamer. Last season he received second-team honors. Chase has two assists on the year and, along with Melamed, anchored a defense that helped the Eagles win their second BIG EAST regular season title.
Kelly, along with assistants Ian Hennessy and Dusan Obsajsnik, led his troops to a 14-4 overall record and an 8-2 BIG EAST mark, earning him his second conference regular season title in his 15-year tenure. This is the fourth time Kelly received this honor, the other ones being 1989, 1990 and 2000.
The 14th-ranked Eagles look to advance to their fifth BIG EAST championship game when they face Georgetown (8-8-1) at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Yurcak Field on the campus of Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J.
