Providence Defeats Boston College in Women's Hockey League Opener

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Women's HOCKEY EAST Association opened regular season play Friday night at Kelley Rink. No. 7 Providence College defeated Boston College, 4-1. The loss gives the Boston College a 1-3-0 (0-1-0 HOCKEY EAST) record on the season, and brings the Friars to 2-2-1 (1-0-0).
Mara Amrhein (Danielle Culgin) of Providence opened the scoring at 18:28 in the first period. Boston College came out of the intermission and knotted the score at 4:24. Alaina Clark hit the net off a pass by Gen Richardson while the Friars were down a skater.
Providence's Katelynn Laffin was also able to capitalize on the power play. She scored the game winner at 8:32 in the second period, from teammates Jenn Butsch and Culgin. Darlene Stephenson (Butsch) and Rush Zimmerman (Ashley Payton) added insurance goals for the visitors.
Sophomore goaltender Lisa Davis recorded 32 saves for Boston College. In the other net, Jana Bugden stopped 12 Boston College opportunities.
The ITECH three stars of the game were Culgin, Clark and Butsch. Culgin and Butsch each gathered two assists on Providence goals, while Clark tallied her third score of the year for Boston College.
The Eagles return to the ice Sunday, Nov. 3 against Northeastern University at 2 p.m. in Chestnut Hill.
