CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College women's ice hockey team (0-1-0) opened its season Friday afternoon with a 3-2 overtime loss to the University of Vermont (1-1-0) at Kelley Rink in Chestnut Hill.
The Eagles began the 2002-03 campaign looking to top the ECAC opponent but came away short. Vermont was first to hit the net when Liz Reed scored 9:29 into the game off a pass from Hilary Johnson while Boston College was shorthanded. The Eagles knotted the score at one at the end of the second period, getting a goal from sophomore Alaina Clark. Kerri Sanders recorded the assist.
Early in the third period, the Catamounts' Jenny Agnew notched their second goal. Vermont faced a tough situation, down five players to three with two in the penalty box. Immediately after the second penalty expired and Vermont returned to full strength, Eagle Lindsey Bazzone evened the score. Freshman Kristin Blundo and senior Jaclyn Kryzak had the assists on the goal.
Boston College entered the overtime period with momentum, but Lindsey Bazzone was called for tripping at 1:54. Vermont capitalized on the opportunity, scoring their second power play goal of the day. Jackie Duerr (assisted by Heather Fifield) beat Eagle goaltender, Lisa Davis, top-shelf for the game winner at 3:39 in the overtime period.
Despite the outcome, the Eagles out-shot the Catamounts 28 to 13. Lisa Davis recorded 10 saves for Boston College, while visiting goalie Tiffany Hayes stopped 26.
The Eagles travel to North Dakota for two games against the Fighting Sioux on October 26 and 27.
