ORONO, Maine- The Boston College women's ice hockey team tied the University of Maine, 3-3, on Wednesday night at Alfond Arena. The Eagles scored three first period goals en route to a 3-1 lead, but had to hang on against a late Black Bear surge to register the tie. Senior forward Kelly McManus scored a goal and added an assist and freshman goaltender Lisa Davis made a career-high 44 saves for the Eagles. With the tie, BC moves to 3-9-2 overall and 1-7-1 in the ECAC.
The Black Bears (8-9-2, 2-6-2 ECAC) jumped out to the early lead just 30 seconds into the game, when Meagan Aarts took a pass from Karen Droog and fired a shot past Davis.
Maine took the early momentum and continued to pepper the BC net. Davis, however, shook off the early goal and settled down, stopping a flurry of Maine shots. BC would tie the score at the 7:19 mark, against the run of play. Sophomore Alaina Clark made good on a McManus pass and beat Maine goalie Amanda Cronin for her first goal of the season. McManus registered the only assist on the score.
The Eagles continued to bury their chances and would take the lead less than two minutes later. Senior Jaclyn Kryzak scored her second goal of the season, past Cronin. The goal was unassisted.
McManus would double the Eagle advantage just over one minute later, taking an Alaina Clark pass and beating Cronin low. At the end of one period, the Eagles held a 3-1 advantage, despite being out shot 14-10.
The home team came out firing in the second period and continued to test the Eagles resolve. Davis, however, was stellar in net, thwarting every Maine rush. The Black Bears held a 15-5 shot advantage for the period, yet the score still remained 3-1 in their opponents' favor.
The third period started out much like the first two had, with the Eagles back on their heels. Davis was called upon to make sensational saves early on, maintaining the two-goal lead. The turning point came at the 15:17 mark, when freshman defender Sarah Carlson was called for a two-minute penalty for boarding. The BC penalty kill, which had killed off 18 of their last 19 shorthanded situations, could not keep the streak going. At 16:27, Droog fired a shot past Davis cutting the Eagle lead to one goal. Aarts and Emily Stevens registered assists on the power play goal.
Droog would send the match into overtime at the 19:03 mark, as the Eagles were again caught in an odd-player situation. This time it was with the goalie pulled that Maine would find the back of the net. Droog took a pass from Stevens and beat Davis along the ice.
Neither team would do enough to light the lamp again, as both net minders saved all shots in the extra period.
For the match, Maine out shot BC 47-23. Davis' 44 saves surpassed her previous career high of 41 saves made against Dartmouth. Cronin made 20 saves for the Black Bears. Maine went 1/6 on the power play, while BC finished 0/2.
The Eagles return to action on Saturday, January 12 at Connecticut. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
