Giuliano Lifts Hockey To Overtime Victory

AMHERST, Mass. - Senior captain Jeff Giuliano's second goal of the game gave Boston College a 4-3, overtime victory at Massachusetts on Monday night at the Mullins Center before 1,284 fans. In a game that did not see a single penalty, the Eagles went ahead 3-0 after the first period only to see their lead disappear as the game wore on. The win moved Boston College to 12-6-2 overall and 5-4-1 in HOCKEY EAST, while UMass went to 7-13-0 overall and 2-5-0 in HOCKEY EAST.
Giuliano's game-winner - at 3:52 of the overtime period - was scored from the slot off a Dave Spina pass. Ryan Shannon also assisted on the goal. The three players combined on three of BC's four goals.
The Eagles used two goals - scored less the one and a half minutes into the game - to take a quick 2-0 lead in the first period. Spina put the Eagles up, 1-0, one minute into the game when he took a Giuliano feed off the left boards. His goal - scored from between the face-off circles - was his fifth of the season. Shannon also assisted on the play.
Spina and Giuliano hooked up for the Eagles' second goal of the game just 24 seconds later. Spina sent in a pass from the neutral zone to Giuliano. He skated in down the right wing and scored on a shot from the right face-of circle at 1:24. Defenseman Andrew Alberts also assisted on the goal.
Tony Voce extended his goal-scoring streak to eight games with his 18th goal of the season at 16:58 of the first. He collected a rebound of an Ales Dolinar shot and found the net with traffic in front of the net. A.J. Walker also assisted on the goal as he broke in on a two-on-one with Dolinar. The goal pushed the lead to 3-0, which held to the end of the first period. Boston College outshot the Minutemen 19-3 in the first stanza.
Massachusetts netted three-straight goals in the second and third periods to negate the Eagles' 3-0 advantage.
The Minutemen broke onto the scoreboard at 7:33 of the second period when Tim Turner scored off a face-off from Greg Mauldin.
In the third period, UMass broken even with goals two and a half minutes apart. Craig MacDonald pulled the Minutemen with in one goal with his goal at 1:39. Samuli Jalkanen and Mauldin assisted on the goal.
At 4:09, Turner struck again and tied the score at 3-3. Left alone in front of the net, Turner took a MacDonald pass for the equalizing goal. Mauldin also assisted on the goal.
The Eagles held a 39-17 shot advantage for the game and earned their first win this season when going to overtime.
Boston College returns to action on Friday, Jan. 11 when the teams kick off a home-and-home series with fifth-ranked UMass-Lowell. The teams will face off at 7 p.m. at Kelley Rink.
