CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - UMass-Lowell defenseman Darryl Green netted one goal and added one assist as the fifth-ranked River Hawks downed host Boston College, 3-2, before 7,132 fans at Kelley Rink on Friday night. The loss was only the 10th-ranked Eagles' second loss at home this season. Both came at the hands of UMass-Lowell.
UMass-Lowell (15-3-1, 7-2-1 HOCKEY EAST) scored the game's first goal at 11:21 of the first period when Steve Slonina tipped in a rebound of a Anders Strome shot. BC goaltender Tim Kelleher made the initial save, but Slonina pocketed the rebound at the goal mouth. Kevin Kotyluk also assisted on the goal.
BC's (12-7-2, 5-5-1 HOCKEY EAST) Dave Spina tied the game with 19 seconds remaining in the first period. He took a long outlet pass from J.D. Forrest, eluded a defender and scored the breakaway goal on UML netminder Cam McCormack. Defenseman Andrew Alberts also assisted on Spina's goal.
The River Hawks used two goals in the second period - one even strength and one on the power play - to take a 3-1 lead after two stanzas.
Green skated around the left face-off circle and scored on a high shot at 4:43. Yorick Treille and Josh Allison assisted on the goal-ahead goal. Dan Fontas netted the game-winning goal - on the power play - at 14:42. His shot from just above the left face-off circle snuck in past a screened Kelleher. Josh Reed and Green assisted on the goal.
The Eagles' late-game comeback stalled in the closing minutes, but not before defenseman Brett Peterson brought the team within one goal at 15:40 of the third period. Peterson picked up a pass in the neutral zone and skated in with a defender on his back, but was able to get the shot off for the goal. Jeff Giuliano and A.J. Walker assisted on the goal.
BC applied strong pressure in the closing minute with an extra attacker, but the River Hawks were able to hold the Eagles off the scoreboard and prevent the tying goal.
McCormack made 19 saves in the win, while Kelleher made 20 saves in the loss.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday, Jan. 12 at Tsongas Arena in Lowell. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
